Gabriel Yared has been hired to score the upcoming drama The Promise. The film is directed by Terry George (Hotel Rwanda, Reservation Road) and stars Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Daniel Gimenez Cacho, James Cromwell and Jean Reno. The movie is set in 1922 amid the final days of the Ottoman Empire and centers on a love triangle in 1922 with a medical student, an American journalist based in Paris and a beautiful and sophisticated woman. George has also written the screenplay with Robin Swicord (Memoirs of a Geisha, Little Women). Eric Esrailian is producing the project for Survival Pictures alongside Mike Medavoy (Black Swan, Shutter Island, Zodiac) for Phoenix Pictures, Ralph Winter (X-Men, Fantastic Four) and William Horberg (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain). The Promise is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere later this year.
Yared has also recently scored Xavier Dolan’s drama It’s Only the End of the World starring Marion Cotillard. The movie premiered last month at the Cannes Film Festival and will be released in France and other European markets this fall. No word yet on a domestic distribution deal.
Sounds promising. It’s great to see Yared doing a fairly “mainstream” project again.
