To the Wonder is written and directed by Malick (Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) and stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem and Olga Kurylenko. The movie follows a Parisian single mother and a Midwestern tourist who fall madly in love in France and relocate to Oklahoma with Marina’s young daughter to start a life together. The drama premiered at last year’s Venice and Toronto Film Festival and was picked up by Magnolia Pictures for a domestic release on April 12. It’s pretty likely that the music in the trailer is totally unrelated to the film’s score. One must assume so because it’s cheap, pulpy and awful — it can’t possibly have been approved by Malick. It is, of course, routine practice for marketing hacks at studios to throw together trailers that violate the underlying aesthetic standards.
