James Horner is currently scoring Carlo Carlei’s upcoming film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. The film stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld in the title roles. The movie’s cast also includes Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet, Natascha McElhone as Lady Capulet, Lesley Manville as the Nurse and Ed Westwick as Tybalt. Other actors include Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence, Ed Westwick & Kodi Smit-McPhee as the lovers’ cousins, Tybalt and Benvolio and Stellan Skarsgard as Prince of Verona. Academy Award-winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, Downton Abbey) has penned the screenplay based on William Shakespeare’s play and is also producing the Amber Entertainment production with Ileen Maisel (Ripley’s Game) and Lawrence Elman. David Tattersall (Star Wars: Episode II & III, The Green Mile) is the film’s cinematographer and Peter Honess (L.A. Confidential and the James Horner-scored Troy) is editing the picture. Oscar-winning costume designer Milena Canonero (The Shining) serves as co-producer. Romeo and Juliet is currently in post-production and a release in 2013 is expected.

Very excited for this one! I only hope that Horner doesn’t reuse any of his beloved themes. I love his style and orchestrations, but it’s always a little discouraging to hear the “Four Feathers”, “Braveheart”, “Titanic” and “Glory” themes regurgitated in his new film scores. I hope this is a certifiably fresh effort and is a big hit!
