Fifty years after her legendary comic book debut, Red Sonja charges back into pop culture with a vengeance, and a voice. Brought to life in a new motion picture from Millennium Media, the flame haired warrior’s return is underscored by a sweeping original score from Emmy winning composers Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli (The Witcher, One Piece), fusing folkloric roots with cinematic power in what may be one of the year’s most thematically ambitious soundtracks.
“When we were approached to score Red Sonja, we were incredibly excited,” said Belousova and Ostinelli. “It meant reuniting with MJ [director M.J. Bassett] and the chance to craft Red Sonja’s elaborate musical universe from the ground up.” That world begins with Sonja’s theme, a raw, emotionally charged melody loosely inspired by the Gaelic folk song “Òran an Ròin,” which the character sings in the film while imprisoned in the Damnati pit. “We knew immediately we didn’t want it to feel like an isolated musical moment, but rather part of the unified soundscape”, they said.
The resulting score is a study in contrasts, both intimate and massive in scale. At its core is a lyrical violin solo layered with haunting vocals. But as Sonja’s character transforms from captive to warrior, so too does the music. Enter her “badass theme”: a thunderous orchestral statement of power, featuring an 80 piece orchestra, 40 piece choir, interwoven with gorgeous vocal and instrumental solos: violin, cello, oud, hurdy-gurdy, ethnic woodwinds, and more. “Sonja is unstoppable in her quest, and so is her theme,” the composers noted.
Scoring to picture, the duo began with one of the film’s most explosive set pieces: a battle between Sonja and the Cyclops. The scene’s visceral energy helped shape the tone of the entire soundtrack. “We needed to find the right balance to match its incredible energy – keeping the stakes high at all times while making the score thematic and dynamic, never letting the grip slip for even a second.”
While the creative direction was collaborative, the filmmakers gave Belousova and Ostinelli room to push boundaries. “Working on massive IPs like Red Sonja is something we’re deeply familiar with. These properties come with extremely passionate fanbases and rich legacies, so it’s crucial for us to honor and respect that history while bringing a bold and unique musical approach.,” they said.
