Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok, The Royal Tenenbaums, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21/22 Jump Street, The Croods: A New Age) has been hired to score the upcoming fantasy adventure A Minecraft Movie. The film is directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) and stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. The movie based on the hit video game follows four misfits who find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. Roy Lee (It, Barbarian), Jon Berg (Elf, Justice League), Mary Parent (The Revenant, Godzilla), Cale Boyter (Dune, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu), Momoa, Jill Messick, Torfi Frans Olafsson and Vu Bui are producing the Legendary Pictures production. Mothersbaugh has previously scored the Lee-produced The Lego Movie, its sequel and The Lego Ninjago Movie. A Minecraft Movie is set to be released in theaters nationwide on April 4, 2025 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Mothersbaugh has also recently scored the documentary The World According to Alle Willis, which premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures for a domestic release, as well as Chris Smith’s Devo documentary, which also premiered at Sundance is currently waiting a release date. He is also expected to return to score the Season 2 of National Geographic’s Disney+ documentary series A Real Bug’s Life and co-score Season 6 FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.
