Marcelo Zarvos (Fences, Wonder, The Affair, Ray Donovan, A Journal for Jordan, The Good Shepherd, Enough Said) has been tapped to score the upcoming historical thriller Emancipation. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer, The Magnificent Seven) and stars Will Smith, Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor and Mustafa Shakir. The movie tells the true story of a runaway slave who had to outwit cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana to escape a Southern plantation and to make his his way North, where he joined the Union Army. William N. Collage (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Assassin’s Creed) wrote the screenplay. Smith is also producing the Westbrook Studios production with James Lassiter (Hitch, I Am Legend) & Jon Mone, alongside Joey McFarland (The Wolf of Wall Street, Papillon) and Escape Artists’ Todd Black (Being the Ricardos, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom). Zarvos has have previously scored Fuqua’s features Brooklyn’s Finest and The Guilty and also collaborated with the filmmaker on the Quibi series #freerayshawnn and the HBO documentaries What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali and The Day Sports Stood Still. Emancipation is expected to be released in select theaters and to premiere on Apple TV+ in 2023.
