Martin Phipps (The Crown, Woman in Gold, War & Peace, The Aftermath, The Honourable Woman, Harry Brown) & Ed Farmer have composed the original music for the upcoming British family drama The Railway Children Return. The film is directed by Morgan Matthews and stars Jenny Agutter, Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay, John Bradley, Beau Gadsdon, K.J. Aikens, Eden Hamilton, Austin Haynes and Zac Cudby. The sequel to the 1970 classic The Railway Children (scored by Johnny Douglas) is set 40 years after the events of the original and follows a new group of children who are evacuated to a Yorkshire village during World War II, where they encounter a young soldier. Danny Brocklehurst (A Teacher, Brassic) wrote the screenplay based on a treatment by Jemma Rodgers (Not Safe for Work) who is also producing the Studiocanal production. Phipps has previously scored Matthews’ narrative directorial feature debut, A Brilliant Young Mind. The Railway Children Return will be released in UK theaters on July 15, 2022.
Phipps’ recent projects also include Ed Perkins’ documentary The Princess, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be released in the UK on June 30. He has also recently started recording his score for the fifth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown, which is expected to premiere in late 2022.
