Singer/songwriter, rapper and composer Meshell Ndegeocello (Queen Sugar, Lackawanna Blues, Disappearing Acts) is scoring the new Fox drama Our Kind of People. The show is created by Karin Gist (Star) based on Lawrence Otis Graham’s book of the same title and stars Yaya DaCosta, Morris Chestnut, Joe Morton, Nadine Ellis, Lance Gross, Rhyon Nicole Brown, Kyle Bary and Alana Bright. The series takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard and follows a strong-willed, single mom as she sets out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line. Derryck “Big Tank” Thornton serves as the project’s music supervisor. Gist is also executive producing the 20th Television and FOX Entertainment production with Lee Daniels (Empire, Precious, The Butler), Marc Velez, Claire Brown, Ben Silverman (The Office), Rodney Ferrell, Pam Williams (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and Montrel McKay. Our Kind of People will premiere tomorrow, September 21 and will air every Tuesday night on Fox. Visit the official show website for updates.

Ndegeocello is also composing the original score for the new Starz original series BMF (Black Mafia Family). The show is executive produced by showrunner Randy Huggins & “50 Cent” Jackson and stars Russell Hornsby, Steve Harris, Demetrius Flenory Jr., Da’Vinchi, Michole Briana White, Ajiona Alexus, Eric Kofi-Abrefa and Myles Truitt. The drama is inspired by the true story of two brothers who rose from the decaying streets of southwest Detroit in the late 1980’s and gave birth to one of the most influential crime families in the U.S. BMF will premiere this coming Sunday, September 26 on Starz.
