Larry Goldings is the composer of the new Netflix original limited series Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker. The show is created by Nicole Jefferson Asher (Love Beats Rhymes) and stars Octavia Spencer, Tiffany Haddish, Carmen Ejogo, Blair Underwood, Garrett Morris, Kevin Carroll and Bill Bellamy. The drama is inspired by the book On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles and tells the true story of an African American washerwoman who rises from poverty to build a beauty empire and become the first female self-made millionaire. Co-showrunners Elle Johnson (Bosch, The Glades) & Janine Sherman Barrois (ER, Criminal Minds) are executive producing the SpringHill Entertainment, Wonder Street and Warner Bros. Television production with Spencer, LeBron James, Maverick Carter (Survivor’s Remorse), Mark Holder & Christine Holder (The Demented, Walter), Eric Oberland, Jamal Henderson (Warriors of Liberty City), as well as Kasi Lemmons (Harriet) who also directed two episodes. Goldings, who is also known as a jazz pianist and songwriter who has worked with artists such as James Taylor, Norah Jones, John Mayer Herbie Hancock, Sia, Christina Aguilera, Elton John, among others, has previously scored Jeff Garlin’s 2013 comedy Dealin’ with Idiots. Self Made will premiere this coming Friday, March 20, exclusively on Netflix.
