Jon Ekstrand has been tapped to score the upcoming comic book movie Morbius. The film is directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and stars Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris and Tyrese Gibson. The movie is based on the Marvel Comics character created by Roy Thomas & Gil Kane and centers on biochemist Michael Morbius as he tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease and inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless (Lost in Space) wrote the screenplay. Avi Arad (Iron Man, Venom) and Matt Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) are producing the project with Lucas Foster (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Man on Fire). Ekstrand has previously collaborated with Espinosa on the features Child 44, Life, Easy Money and the director’s early Scandinavian films. Morbius is currently in post-production and is set to be released on July 31, 2020 by Sony Pictures.
Ekstrand’s other recent projects include May el-Toukhy’s Queen of Hearts, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by Breaking Glass Pictures for a domestic release in 2020.
