The Television Academy has announced that it will be introducing a new category for Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special at next year’s Emmy Awards. The category will recognize “the unique creative process and evaluation criteria for documentary scoring, versus scoring for scripted series or specials.” Documentary series were previously eligible in the Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) category. The TV Academy also announced that music supervisors who previously only voted in the Outstanding Music Supervision category, which was introduced in 2017, can now vote in all music categories.
