Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the war drama 12 Strong directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and starring Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon and Michael Peña. The film’s original music is composed by Lorne Balfe (The LEGO Batman Movie, Genius, The Crown, Terminator Genisys, Home). Also opening wide is the heist thriller Den of Thieves directed by Christian Gudegast and starring Gerard Butler, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Pablo Schreiber, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Evan Jones, Cooper Anderson and Maurice Compte. Cliff Martinez (Drive, Traffic, The Neon Demon, Narc, The Foreigner) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening wide is the romantic drama Forever My Girl written and directed by Bethany Ashton Wolf and starring Alex Roe, Jessica Rothe, Abby Ryder Fortson, Travis Tritt, Judith Hoag and John Benjamin Hickey. The film’s original songs and score are composed by Brett Boyett. Capitol Records Nashville has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from and inspired by the film performed by Roe, Little Big Town, Dan Tyminski, Josh Turner, Mason James & more. Opening in select theaters is the Japanese animated feature Mary and the Witch’s Flower directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and featuring the voices of Ruby Barnhill, Kate Winslet, Jim Broadbent, Ewen Bremner, Lynda Baron, Louis Ashbourne Serkis and Morwenna Banks. Takatsugu Muramatsu has composed the film’s original music. Toy’s Factory has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score this past fall when the movie opened in Asia. Also opening in limited release is the crime thriller Small Town Crime written and directed by Eshom Nelms & Ian Nelms and starring John Hawkes, Anthony Anderson, Octavia Spencer, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael Vartan, Caity Lotz, James Lafferty and Robert Forster. The film’s original music is composed by Chris Westlake (Before We Go, Transit, Little People, Big World). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which centers on an ex-cop who discovers the body of a young woman and, in an act of self-redemption, becomes hell bent on finding the killer, is being released in theaters and on VOD by Saban Films.
Another limited release this week is the horror comedy Mom and Dad written and directed by Brian Taylor and starring Nicolas Cage, Selma Blair, Anne Winters, Zackary Arthur and Lance Henriksen. Mr. Bill has composed the film’s original music. The movie about a worldwide mass hysteria where, for 24 brutal hours, parents turn violently against their own children premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD by Momentum Pictures.
Missing from last week’s film music roundup was the comedy drama Freak Show directed by Trudie Styler and starring Alex Lawther, Abigail Breslin, AnnaSophia Robb, Ian Nelson, Celia Weston, Willa Fitzgerald, Laverne Cox, Larry Pine, Bette Midler and John McEnroe. Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Beasts of No Nation, The Good Doctor, Atypical) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released yet.
