valerian-and-the-city-of-a-thousand-planetsLuc Besson has announced on Twitter that Alexandre Desplat will compose the music for the upcoming sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The film stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Sam Spruell, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock and John Goodman. The movie is based on Pierre Christin’s French sci-fi comic series Valérian and Laureline and follows a pair of 28th century agents who guard against temporal paradoxes at a time when humans can travel through space and time. Besson has also written the screenplay and is producing the project with Virginie Besson-Silva (The Family, The Lady). Besson has previously collaborated with composer Eric Serra on most of his directorial efforts, including The Fifth Element, Lucy, Leon: The Professional and La Femme Nikita. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is set to be released on July 21, 2017 by EuropaCorp.

Desplat’s recent projects also include Ewan McGregor’s American Pastoral, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and will be released on October 14 by Lionsgate, Jerome Salle’s The Odyssey, which will be released in France next month, as well as the drama Heal the Living, which premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and was picked up by Cohen Media Group for a domestic release in 2017.
