The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War directed by Anthony & Joe Russo and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Rudd. The film’s original music is composed by Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: First Class, Wreck-It-Ralph, Big Hero 6). Already playing in limited release since this past Wednesday is the dramatic thriller A Bigger Splash directed by Luca Guadagino and starring Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson. The film doesn’t feature an original score. Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by The Rolling Stones, Captain Beefheart, Robert Mitchum, Chrisma, Nilsson, Popol Vuh & more. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama Being Charlie directed by Rob Reiner and starring Nick Robinson, Morgan Saylor, Devon Bostick, Susan Misner, Ricardo Chavira, Common and Cary Elwes. The film’s original music is composed by Chris Bacon (Source Code, Bates Motel, Gnomeo & Juliet, Alpha and Omega). No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie follows an 18-year-old who breaks out of a youth drug treatment clinic, but when he returns home, he’s given an intervention by his parents. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by Paladin.
Also opening in select cities is the romantic drama Mothers and Daughters directed by Paul Duddridge and starring Susan Sarandon, Sharon Stone, Courteney Cox, Christina Ricci, Mira Sorvino, Eva Amurri Martino, Paul Wesley, Selma Blair and Ashanti. David Hlebo has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. Mothers & Daughters tells a couple of interwoven stories of what it is to be a mom seen through the lens of photographer Rigby Gray. The drama is being released by Screen Media Films. Also opening in select U.S. theaters this weekend is the drama Dheepan directed by Jacques Audiard and starring Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan, Claudine Vinasithamby, Vincent Rottiers and Marc Zinga. The film’s original music is composed by Nicolas Jaar who is best known as an electronic music producer and part of the duo Darkside. No soundtrack album has been released. Dheepan follows a former soldier, a young woman and a little girl who pose as a family to escape the civil war in Sri Lanka and end up settling in a housing project outside Paris. The drama premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or and is being released in the U.S. by IFC Films/Sundance Selects. Click here for more information.
Another limited release this week is the documentary Dark Horse directed by Louise Osmond. The movie tells the true story of a group of friends from a working men’s club who decide to take on the elite ‘sport of kings’ and breed themselves a racehorse. Anne Nikitin (The Imposter, This Beautiful Fantastic) has composed the film’s original music. Several tracks from the composer’s score can be checked out on her official website.
