Last night, the 6th Guild of Music Supervisors Awards were handed out at Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Jojo Villanueva received the honor in the Best Music Supervision in Motion Picture – Motion Picture Over 25M for his work on F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton. Randall Poster received the award in the Motion Picture Under 25M category for his music supervision on Todd Haynes’ Carol starring Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara. In the Motion Picture Under 5M category category, Howard Paar was honored for his work on the indie drama The Diary of a Teenage Girl. For the first time an award for the best song/recording created for a film was given out. The winner in the category was See You Again from Furious 7 written by DJ Frank E, Charlie Puth, Wiz Khalifa and Andrew Cedar. The song previously received a Golden Globe nomination, but was missing from the Best Original Song category at the Academy Awards. In addition, Julie Houlihan, Micki Stern and Suzanne Coffman were the winners in the Best Music Supervision – Documentary category for their music supervision on The Wrecking Crew.
Liza Richardson won the award for the first season of Netflix’s Narcos in the TV Drama category, while Jen Ross and Dave Jordan took home the award in the TV Comedy or Musical category for their work on Fox’s Empire. Evyen Klean & Jennifer Reeve were honored with their first Guild of Music Supervisors Awards for HBO’s Bessie in the Television Limited Series or Movie category and Clyde Lieberman & Jill Meyers received the award in the Reality Television category for seasons 8 of NBC’s The Voice. Another new category was launched to honor the best original song/recording created for television. The award went to the song You’re So Beautiful by Jussie Smollet from Fox’s Empire. Other winners include Steve Schnur for the Electronic Arts video game Star Wars: Battlefront, Maura Duvall Griffin and Ali Pistoresi for the trailer #2 of Steve Jobs (Motive), Bobby Gumm for the comic-con first look trailer of Suicide Squad (Trailer Park), Apple for best use of music for a brand and Able Park in the Best Use of Music, Music House/Agency category.
For the first time, the organization gave out the Guild of Music Supervisors Legacy award. Chris Montan was honored for his work at Walt Disney Music, where he currently holds the head of music position. Under his guidance, the company received 42 Musical Academy Award nominations, and 16 Academy Awards in the “Best Song,” “Best Score,” and “Best Musical” categories for films including Frozen, The Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Monsters Inc. and Aladdin. Mitchell Leib, President of Music & Soundtracks at Disney, presented the award to Montan following a tribute video, which featured appearances by several of his colleagues, including composer/songwriter Alan Menken and Pixar/Disney Animation’s John Lasseter. The awards show also featured a number of live performances by Meghan Trainor who performed her song Better When I’m Dancin’ from The Peanuts Movie, Andra Day who performed The Light That Never Fails from the documentary Meru, BØRNS who sang Electric Love used in a campaign for Hulu, as well as Nate Heller and Reni Lane who performed Dreamsong from the soundtrack for The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Among the presenters throughout the evening were actress Rebel Wilson, composer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL, singer/songwriter and Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell and American Idol season 14 winner Nick Fradiani.
