Last night, the 5th Guild of Music Supervisors Awards were handed out at the Mack Sennett Studios in Hollywood. Dave Jordan received the honor in the Best Music Supervision in Motion Picture – Motion Picture Over 25M for his work on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy. The film’s soundtrack release on Hollywood Records was also the year’s best-selling title. Season Kent received the award in the Motion Picture Under 25M category for her music supervision on the hit feature The Fault in Our Stars starring Shailene Woodley. In the Independent Motion Pictures Under 10M category, Matt Sullivan and Andrea von Foerster were honored for their work on Begin Again, which just received an Academy Award nomination in the Best Original Song category last week. Andy Ross was the winner in the Independent Motion Pictures Under 5M category for his music supervision on Whiplash starring Miles Teller & J.K. Simmons.
Frankie Pine won the award for the third season of ABC’s Nashville in the TV Comedy or Musical category, while Madonna Wade-Reed took the award in the TV Drama category for the second season of The CW’s Reign. Ryan Murphy’s regular music supervisor PJ Bloom was honored with his first Guild of Music Supervisors Award for HBO’s The Normal Heart in the Television Long Form and Movies category and Clyde Lieberman & Jill Meyers received the award in the Reality Television category for seasons 6 & 7 of NBC’s The Voice. In addition, Walt Disney Pictures (Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero 6, The Hundred-Foot Journey) and 20th Century Fox (The Fault in Our Stars, Gone Girl) shared the 2015 Studio Award for Music in Film, while 20th Century Fox Television (Glee, Sleepy Hollow, 24: Live Another Day) was the winner in the Studio Award for Music in TV category. Other winners include Cybele Pettus for the Electronic Arts video game FIFA 15, JT Griffith for best use of music for a brand for Nike, Peymon Maskin for Media Arts Lab in the Best Use of Music, Music House/Agency category and Vanessa Jorge for the teaser trailer to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice (Aspect Ratio).
The awards show also featured a number of live performances by Universal Music Group artists Mat Kearney (Republic Records), Laura Welsh (Island Records) and Kevin Ross (Motown Records). Among the presenters throughout the evening were singer/songwriter/composer Moby, Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla, singer/songwriter KT Tunstall, songwriter Dianne Warren who just received her seventh Oscar nomination for Beyond the Lights, Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch, New Radicals’ and recent Oscar nominee for Begin Again, Gregg Alexander, singer/songwriter Ester Dean, musician Gavin Rossdale and singer/songwriter Kenny Loggins.
