Academy Awards Nominations Announced

oscars9This morning, the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced. Here are the music-related nominations:

Best Original Score:

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel – Alexandre Desplat
  • The Imitation Game – Alexandre Desplat
  • Interstellar – Hans Zimmer
  • Mr. Turner – Gary Yershon
  • The Theory of Everything – Johann Johannsson

Best Original Song:

  • Everthing is Awesome From The Lego Movie
  • , Music & Lyric by Shawn Patterson

  • Glory From Selma
  • , Music by John Stephens & Lonnie Lynn

  • Grateful From Beyond the Lights
  • , Music & Lyric by Dianne Warren

  • I’m Not Gonna Miss You From Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me
  • , Music & Lyric by Glen Campbell & Julian Raymond

  • Lost Stars From Begin Again
  • , Music & Lyric by Gregg Alexander & Danielle Brisebois

Johann Johannsson and Gary Yershon were nominated for the first time in any category. Hans Zimmer received his 10th Oscar nomination and Alexandre Desplat received his 7th and 8th nomination (in nine years). Diane Warren was honored with her 7th nomination in the Best Original Song category. All other song contenders are first time nominees.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2014 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live on the ABC Television Network.

    wow….its going to be desplat or zimmer and I’m serious about it.

      Not necessarily, Johan Johannsson won the Golden Globe over both Hans Zimmer and Trent Reznor. At this point it’s anyone’s game.

      If they give it to Zimmer, I think I’m done pretending to care about the Academy Awards to any degree. It’s the Frenchman’s year, dammit!

    The Academy has the tendency of giving the award to newcomers and relatively unknown composers. Especially if this is their first nomination. Remember, for example, Ludovic Bource or Jan A.P. Kaczmarek? So, I think that it’s most likely that Johann Johannsson wins the Award.

    Btw, who is Gary Yershon? His score weren’t released on album format, right?

      The Theory of Everything is unlikely to sweep the categories, so I can’t see a repeat of what happened with The Artist.

      Yershon is (apparently) Mike Leigh’s go-to composer and yes, his Mr. Turner score was released as an album by Varèse Sarabande.

    The problem I have with the composers is that Johan Johansson has plagiarised Alexandre Desplat’s scores, from Kings Speech to Incredibly and extremely loud…
