Only one movie is opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in around 600 theaters is the horror thriller The Pyramid directed by Gregory Levasseur, produced by Alexandre Aja and starring Ashley Hinshaw, James Buckley, Denis O’Hare, Christa Nicola and Amir K. The film’s original music is composed by Nima Fakhrara (The Signal, The Courier). No soundtrack album has been announced. The Pyramid follows a group of U.S. archaeologists who discover a lost pyramid unlike any other in the Egyptian desert. The thriller is being released by 20th Century Fox. Already playing in select theaters since this past Wednesday is the drama Wild directed by Jean-Marc Vallee and starring Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski, Gaby Hoffman, Kevin Rankin and Michiel Huisman. The film doesn’t feature an original score. Sony Legacy has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by such artists as Simon & Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, Portishead, The Shangri-Las, Billy Swan, Lucina Williams, Wings, Pat Metheny Group & more. Also opening in limited release this weekend is the thriller Dying of the Light written and directed by Paul Schrader and starring Nicolas Cage, Anton Yelchin, Alexander Karim, Irène Jacob, Adetomiwa Edun, Aymen Hamdouchi, Claudius Peters and Robert G. Slade. Frederik Wiedmann (Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Son of Batman) has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Dying of the Light follows a former CIA agent embarking on a global manhunt for his long-standing nemesis, while simultaneously battling an aggressive form of Alzheimer’s Disease. The thriller is being released in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate.
Another limited release this week is the Norwegian thriller Pioneer directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg and starring Aksel Hennie, Wes Bentley, Stephanie Sigman, Stephen Lang and Jonathan LaPaglia. The French electronic music duo Air has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. Pioneer is set in the early 80s and centers on the risky experiments and shady dealings that led to the birth of the Norwegian oil-drilling industry. The thriller made its international debut at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released in the U.S. both in theaters and on VOD by Magnolia Pictures. Also receiving a limited release is the indie romantic comedy Life Partners c0-written and directed by Susanna Fogel and starring Leighton Meester, Gillian Jacobs, Adam Brody and Gabourey Sidibe. The film’s original music is composed by Eric D. Johnson (Our Idiot Brother, Smashed, Goodbye World, Ceremony). No word on a soundtrack release. Life Partners centers on the codependent friendship between two very different girls and the guy who comes between them. The comedy premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Also opening in select theaters is the dark comedy Murder of a Cat directed by Gillian Greene, produced by Sam Raimi and starring Fran Kranz, Nikki Reed, J. K. Simmons, Blythe Danner and Greg Kinnear. Deborah Lurie (Dear John, 9, Safe Haven, Fun Size) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album is available for the film. The comedy premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released on VOD and in theaters by Gravitas Ventures. Also opening in select cities is the thriller By the Gun directed by James Mottern and starring Ben Barnes, Leighton Meester, Harvey Keitel, Toby Jones, Slaine, Kenny Wormald, Paul Ben-Victor and Jay Giannone. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Whitehead (The Purge, The Last Ship, The Purge: Anarchy). By the Gun follows a young and ambitious mafia criminal whose life spirals out of control once he becomes a made man. The thriller is being released in theaters and on VOD by Millennium Films. Another limited release this week is the indie romantic comedy Comet written and directed by Sam Esmail and starring Emmy Rossum, Justin Long and Eric Winter. Daniel Hart (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) has composed the film’s original music. Comet is set in a parallel universe and bounces back and forth over the course of an unlikely but perfectly paired couple’s six-year relationship. Also opening in limited release is the thriller Poker Night written and directed by Greg Francis and starring Ron Perlman, Giancarlo Esposito, Beau Mirchoff, Titus Welliver, Michael Eklund, Ron Eldard and Corey Large. The film’s original music is composed by Scott Glasgow (Hatchet III, Taking Chances, Chasing Ghosts). A couple of tracks from the score are available on the composer’s Soundcloud channel. Poker Night follows a young detective who is caught in a sadistic game of cat-and-mouse when he is kidnapped and tormented by a masked serial killer. The thriller is being released by XLrator Media and is now also available on VOD.
