The Newton Brothers have been hired to score the upcoming political drama The Runner. The film marks the directorial debut of Austin Stark and stars Nicolas Cage, Sarah Paulson, Connie Nielsen, Peter Fonda, Bryan Batt and Wendell Pierce. The movie takes place in the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill and follows a idealistic but flawed congressman who is forced to confront his dysfunctional life after his career is destroyed in a sex scandal. Stark has also written the screenplay. Benji Kohn, Bingo Gubelmann & Chris Papavasiliou (Happythankyoumoreplease) and Erika Hampson (Mall) are producing the project for Paper Street Films, alongside Glenn Williamson (The Omen, Sunshine Cleaning, Push) for Back Lot Pictures. The Newton Brothers have previously scored the Stark-produced 2010 feature Detachment for Paper Street Films. The Runner is currently in post-production and is expected to be released in 2015.
The composer duo whose previous scoring credits include Oculus, Life of Crime, Pawn Shop Chronicles and The Prince also have the horror thriller Somnia (co-scored with Danny Elfman) coming up. The Newton Brothers’ upcoming projects also include the indie thriller Pacific Standard Time written and directed by Benjamin and Orson Cummings and starring Alex Russell, Willa Holland and Miguel Gomez, as well as the action movie Vendetta directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska and starring WWE star Big Show/Paul Wright as a detective who seeks vengeance against the man who murdered his wife by getting himself jailed in the same prison where the killer is serving a life sentence. Both movies are expected to be released in 2015.
