Cliff Martinez revealed in a recent interview with Celluloid Tunes during this year’s Ghent Film Festival that he is set to score the upcoming drama Beasts of No Nation. The film is written and directed by Cary Fukunaga and stars Idris Elba, Ama K. Abebrese, Grace Nortey, David Dontoh and Opeyemi Fagbohungbe. The movie is based on the novel of the same title by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala and follows the journey of a boy who is forced to join a group of soldiers in an unnamed West African country. Amy Kaufman (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Sin Nombre), Riva Marker & Daniela Taplin Lundberg (The Kids Are All Right, Grace Is Gone, What Maisie Knew) are producing the Participant Media and Red Crown production. Fukunaga has previously collaborated with such composers as Dario Marianelli (Jane Eyre), Marcelo Zarvos (Sin Nombre) and T Bone Burnett (True Detective). Beasts of No Nation is currently in post-production and is expected to be released in 2015 by Focus Features.
Martinez also recently scored the video game Far Cry 4. A soundtrack album for the game is set to be released on December 2, 2014 by Invada Records and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The composer is also expected to return to score the second season of Steven Soderbergh’s Cinemax series The Knick, which is set to premiere in 2015. In addition, Martinez also composed the music for a number of Lincoln car commercials directed by Nicolas Winding-Refn and featuring Matthew McConaughey.
