Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the film adaptation of the musical Rock of Ages directed by Adam Shankman and starring Juliannne Hough, Diego Bonito, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Akerman, Paul Giamatti, Mary J. Blige and Alec Baldwin. WaterTower Music has released the official soundtrack featuring film’s cover versions of classic rock songs by Guns N’Roses, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Poison, Reo Speedwagon, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar and Twisted Sister performed by the film’s cast members. Also opening wide is the comedy That’s My Boy directed by Sean Anders & John Morris (Sex Drive) and starring Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, James Caan, Susan Sarandon, Milo Ventimiglia and Will Forte. Rupert Gregson-Williams has composed the movie’s original score. The composer has been scoring most films produced by Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions over the last couple of years. Opening in limited release is the indie romantic comedy Your Sister’s Sister written and directed by Lynn Shelton and starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and Mark Duplass. The movie is scored by Vince Smith who has previously worked with Shelton on the indie Humpday. No soundtrack release has been announced. The film premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, where it was picked up by IFC for domestic distribution. Also opening in select cities is the documentary The Art of Rap directed by Andy Baybutt. In the film, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Ice-T travels coast to coast, visiting with rappers including Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, Nas, Mos Def, Eminem, Chuck D, Run-DMC, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg to trace the inspiration for an American art form. Also opening in limited release is the French thriller The Woman in the Fifth directed by Pawel Pawlikowski and starring Ethan Hawke, Kristin Scott Thomas, Joanna Kulig and Samir Guesmi. The movie follows an American writer who moves to Paris and meets a widow who might be involved in a series of murders. Max de Wardener has composed the film’s music.
