According to a recent posting on Twitter by Oliver Weindling, founder of the British label Babel (via The Playlist and Cigarettes & Red Vines), Jonny Greenwood has recently recorded music for Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated religious drama The Master. The Radiohead guitarist has previously scored Anderson’s last movie, the 2007 drama There Will Be Blood starring Daniel Day-Lewis. The Master stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952. Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Josh Close and Fiona Dourif are co-starring. Anderson is also producing the film with JoAnne Sellar & John Lesher (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood), Bill Pohlad (Into the Wild) and Megan Ellison (Wettest County). The Weinstein Company is handling worldwide distribution and is expected to release the movie towards the end of next year.
Greenwood has scored a number of movies since his first collaboration with Anderson, including the drama We Need to Talk About Kevin, which will be released in Los Angeles this Friday, December 9 by Oscilloscope Pictures for an awards-qualifying run. The movie directed by Lynne Ramsay and starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller revolves around the mother of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree and tries to deal with her grief and feelings of responsibility for her child’s actions by writing to her estranged husband. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and has been receiving a lot of attention for Swinton’s lead performance.
