Heitor Pereira has been hired to score the upcoming film adaptation of The Smurfs. The film marks Sony Pictures Animation’s first live-action/animated hyrbid film and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara in the primary live-action roles. The film’s voice talent includes Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Alan Cummings and Katy Perry. The movie is directed by Raja Gosnell who has previously worked with Pereira on Disney’s 2008 hit family movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The Smurfs were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (aka Peyo) and have spawned numerous print and smallscreen incarnations, the most popular one in the United States being the Hanna-Barbera cartoon version. Pereira is coming off scoring his biggest hit of his career with last year’s Despicable Me. The composer also has the romantic comedy A Little Bit of Heaven starring Kate Hudson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Bates coming up (visit our previous article for more information). The film already premiered in the UK earlier this way and is still awaiting a domestic release date.
