Last night, the 7th Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMAA) were handed out at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Nicholas Britell was honored with his first HMMA award for his score for Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight in the Original Score – Feature Film category. John Debney was awarded for his music for Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film category. He previously received an Outstanding Career Achievement award at the inaugural Hollywood Music in Media Awards show in 2009. Alexandre Desplat won his first HMMA for his work on The Secret Life of Pets in the Animated Film category and Mark Adler was honored for his score for Command and Control in the Documentary category. Among the winners in the song categories, Justin Hurwitz accepted the award for the song City of Stars from Damien Chazelle’s La La Land in the Feature Film category, while Pink’s Just Like Fire from Alice Through the Looking Glass, Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling from DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls and Trent Reznor’s & Atticus Ross’ A Minute to Breathe from Before the Flood won in the respective categories for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film, Animated Film and Documentary. Among the winners in the categories for television/digital series music were Alex Heffes who was honored for his work on the History mini-series Roots and Victor Reyes who received his first HMMA Award for his main titles theme for AMC’s The Night Manager, two months after receiving an Emmy Award for his work on the project. All composers in the major score categories accepted their awards in person. The Music Supervision awards went to Jojo Villanueva for Illumination Entertainment’s upcoming feature Sing and Nora Felder for Netflix’s Stranger Things. Other winners at the event include Derek Duke, Neal Acree, Sam Cardon & Cris Velasco for Overwatch in the Original Score – Vide Game category and Scott Glasgow for The Curse of Sleeping Beauty in the Original Score – Independent Film category. Throughout the evening, there were several musical live performances by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester and Melanie who performed her hit song Brand New Key.
