Canadian singer/songwriter and music producer Katie Austra Stelmanis is set to make her narrative feature scoring debut on the upcoming drama Maya & Samar. The film is directed by Anita Doron (screenwriter of The Breadwinner) and stars Nicolette Pearse and Amanda Babaei Vieira. The movie follows a rising journalist for a hip indie website who covers sex and music with free-flowing thought and liberal practice and a queer Afghan who escaped from the Taliban and now lives without papers and working as a dancer in a Athens club for cash whose worlds collide in a torrid affair that exposes their conflicting cultures. Tamara Faith Berger (Lie With Me) wrote the screenplay. Robert Lantos (Eastern Promises, Being Julia) is producing the project for Serendipity Point Films, alongside Julia Rosenberg (Charlotte) for January Media. Stelmanis has previously scored last year’s documentary Swan Song directed by Chelsea McMullan. Maya & Samar is currently shooting in Athens, Greece and is expected to premiere in 2025. (Deadline)
