Alex Somers (Captain Fantastic, Honey Boy, Fresh, Causeway, Aloha, Charm City Kings, Together, Together, Dawson City: Frozen Time) & Scott Alario have composed the original score for the upcoming drama Nickel Boys. The film is directed by RaMell Ross and stars Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger and Daveed Diggs. The movie based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is set in Jim Crow-era Florida and follows an idealistic Black high schooler whose aims of attending college are upended when racist law officials falsely accuse and then convict him of a crime and he gets sent to an abusive reformatory school. Ross also co-wrote the screenplay with Joslyn Barnes (Strong Island, White Sun). Plan B Entertainment’s Dede Gardner & Jeremy Kleiner (12 Years a Slave, Moonlight) are producing the project with David Levine (Disclaimer, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) and Barnes. Somers & Alorio have previously collaborated with Ross on the director’s first feature, Hale County This Morning, This Evening. Nickel Boys will premiere this weekend at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival and is set to be released in select theaters on October 25 by Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures.
Somers’ other upcoming feature projects include Mimi Cave’s Holland, Michigan, which is currently awaiting a release date.
