Singer/songwriter, record producer and actor Benjamin Biolay has composed the original music for the upcoming French biographical drama Becoming Maria (Maria). The film is written and directed by Jessica Palud (Revenir) and stars Anamaria Vartolomei as Last Tango in Paris star Maria Schneider and Matt Dillon as Marlon Brando. The movie is based on Vanessa Schneider’s 2018 memoir My Cousin Maria about the titular actress whose dreams come true when an emerging Italian director casts her to headline a new film alongside an American superstar, but what seems like a big breakthrough turns out to be the start of a living hell. Marielle Duigou (A Kid, French Blood) is producing the project. Biolay has previously scored several features, including André Téchiné’s In the Name of My Daughter, Arnaud Viard’s Clara et Moi and André Bonzel’s Flickering Ghosts of Loves Gone By. Being Maria will premiere this week at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and is set to open in French theaters on June 19.
