Bill Lee has passed away today at age 94 at his home in Brooklyn. The composer and jazz musician was known for scoring his son Spike Lee’s early films, including Do the Right Thing, She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze and Mo’ Better Blues. He also composed the music for the director’s 1983 short Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads. Lee was also an established jazz bassist and has performed with artists such as Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Harry Belafonte, Aretha Franklin, Chris Anderson, Odetta, Cat Stevens & others. Spike Lee announced the news of his father’s passing on Instagram.
