John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, The Jungle Book, Iron Man 2, Elf) has recently been recording his score for the upcoming biographical drama American Underdog. The film is directed by the Erwin Brothers (I Can Only Imagine, Woodlawn) and stars Zachary Levi, Anna Paquin and Dennis Quaid. The movie tells the true story of Kurt Warner who went from a stockboy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. Jon Erwin & David Aaron Cohen (Friday Night Lights, The Devil’s Own) and Jon Gunn (Mercy Streets) wrote the screenplay based on the book All Things Possible Kurt Warner and Michael Silver. Jon Erwin is also producing the Kingdom Company production with Kevin Downes, Andrew Erwin, Mark Ciardi (Miracle, McFarland, USA) and Daryl Lefever (Moms’ Night Out). Debney has previously scored the Erwin Brothers’ previous narrative feature, I Still Believe. American Underdog is set to be released in theaters on Christmas Day, December 25, 2021 by Lionsgate. Visit the official movie website for updates.
Debney’s upcoming feature projects also include the Disney+ original movie Home Sweet Home Alone (to premiere on November 12, 2021), Kat Coiro’s Marry Me (opening in theaters on February 11, 2022), as well as Walt Becker’s Clifford the Big Red Dog, which is currently awaiting a new release date.
I wish Debney can score Hocus Pocus 2 and the new Haunted Mansion movie (his work in Phantom Manor was excellent)
