Dan Romer has composed the original music for the upcoming indie drama Freak Show. The film marks the narrative feature directorial debut of Trudie Styler and stars Alex Lawther, Abigail Breslin, AnnaSophia Robb, Bette Midler, Ian Nelson, Celia Weston, Willa Fitzgerald, Laverne Cox and John McEnroe. The movie is based on the book of the same title by James St. James and follows a cross-dressing teenager who, despite attending an ultra conservative high school, makes the decision to run for homecoming queen. Patrick J. Clifton (Raising Helen, Son in Law) wrote the screenplay. Styler is also producing the project with Jeffrey Coulter (Expired), Bryan Rabin, Celine Rattray (The Kids Are All Right, Bernie), Charlotte Ubben, Ember Truesdell (Tough Love), Chris Miller (Santa Clarita Diet). Drew Barrymore is among the movie’s executive producers. Freak Show will premiere next month at the Berlin Film Festival.
Romer’s recent projects also include the comedy The Little Hours and the documentary Chasing Coral. Both movies premiered earlier this month at the Sundance Film Festival and were picked up by Gunpowder & Sky and Netflix respectively for a release later this year.
