Magne Furuholmen, best known as a member of the international pop group a-ha, has signed on to compose the original score, as well as supervise the recordings of other music for the upcoming film Beatles. The movie is based on the bestselling novel by Lars Saabye Christensen and tells the story about four Norwegian youngsters growing up in the 60s and 70s, modeling themselves on their musical heroes: The Beatles. Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg whose last feature Kon-Tiki was nominated in the “Best Foreign Language Film” category at this year’s Academy Awards are directing the film from a script by Axel Hellstenius (Elling). Jørgen Storm Rosenberg (The Bothersome Man) is producing the project through his production company and has signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing and EMI that several of The Beatles’ original recordings can be used in their entirety in the film. Beatles is scheduled to go into production in June and will be released in Norway on February 14, 2014, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the novel.

Ah ha — A-HA that did that “Take on Me” song. One of the few songs I actually enjoyed — not one of the best I’ve heard, but still.
But that’s no reflection on the score, especially considering I have no idea what songs he’s done the backing music for. Or if he even has any experience at all.
No experience ? 30 years in the music branch and not experienced ?
30 years of what? Has he written instrumental music? Does he have any training? Somebody can have 30 years experience in the resturant business as a waiter/seriver/ busser, but that doesn’t mean because they were there for 30 years they can be the master chef.
For all we know he was a lyracist and just jammed in the band.
Anyway, we’ll find out. I think it’s an interesting choice and shall wait for the result.
Yes, Magne F has written pure instrumental music for movies and documentaries already before, so yes he has experience in that.
