UPDATE (February 24, 2011): The Gardener has recently received a new title: A Better Life.
Alexandre Desplat has been hired to score the upcoming drama The Gardener. In the movie, a gardener in East L.A. struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while traveling across town to perform landscaping work for the city’s wealthy landowners. The Gardener is directed by Chris Weitz who previously worked with Desplat on The Golden Compass and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The indie drama stars Demian Bichir. No release date has been set yet for the Summit Entertainment movie.
Desplat has a number of other movies coming out in the near future: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is opening mid-November, The King’s Speech starring Colin Firth, which is being discussed as one of the frontrunners during this year’s Awards season, is opening in December and Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life has recently received a May, 2011 release date by Fox Searchlight. Also opening early next year in Europe is the adventure thriller The Burma Conspiracy starring Sharon Stone, which is the sequel to the 2008 movie Largo Winch that Desplat scored a while back. Finally, Desplat is also scoring the French film La fille du puisatier starring and directed by Daniel Auteuil. The movie is also expected to be released in early 2011 in France.
