Already playing in theaters nationwide since this past Wednesday is the animated feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie directed by Aaron Horvath & Michael Jelenic and starring Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black Black and Seth Rogen. The film’s original music is composed by Brian Tyler (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fast Five, Crazy Rich Asians, Yellowstone, Iron Man 3) with original Nintendo themes by Koji Kondo. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music and two songs from the movie today. iam8bit will release physical editions in various formats. Also already out since Wednesday is the biographical drama Air directed by Ben Affleck and starring Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Viola Davis, Affleck himself, Chris Tucker and Chris Messina. Paul Haslinger (Underworld, Halt and Catch Fire) has contributed a few original score cues to the film, which mostly features tracks from 80s scores by Tangerine Dream, Harold Faltermeyer, among other composers . Sony’s Legacy Recordings has released a soundtrack album featuring the 80s hits from the movie by Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, The Clash, RUN DMC, Cyndi Lauper & other artists earlier this week. Opening semi-wide in around 800 theaters is the comedy Paint written and directed by Brit McAdams and starring Owen Wilson, Ciara Renée, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Stephen Root, Michaela Watkins, Lusia Strus and Lucy Freyer. The film’s original music is composed by Lyle Workman (Superbad, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Overboard, Win/WinLove). No word on a soundtrack release. Opening in select theaters this weekend is the thriller How to Blow Up a Pipeline co-written and directed byDaniel Goldhaber and starring Ariela Barer, Kristine Froseth, Sasha Lane, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Jayme Lawson, Marcus Scribner and Jake Weary. Gavin Brivik (Wild Indian, CamThe Seventh DayLiving Undocumented, Minor Premise) has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening in select theaters is the drama Showing Up co-written and directed by Kelly Reichardt and starring Michelle Williams, Hong Chau, John Magaro, André Benjamin, Maryann Plunkett, James Le Gros and Judd Hirsch. The film’s original music is composed by Ethan Rose (Code Blue, Magic Mountains). No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which revolves around a sculptor who is preparing to open a new show and must balance her creative life with the daily dramas of family and friends, premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by A24.

Opening in select theaters this week before coming out on VOD next Friday, April 14, is the romantic drama One True Loves directed by Andy Fickman and starring Simu Liu, Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey, Michaela Conlin, Michael O’Keefe, Lauren Tom, Tom Everett Scott and Oona Yaffe. Nathan Wang (She’s All That, Playing with Fire, You Again, The Game Plan, Chinese Zodiac) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. The movie, which is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel of the same title, is being distributed by The Avenue.

Already playing in theaters since this past Tuesday and releasing on VOD and Digital today is the crime drama One Day as a Lion directed by John Swab and starring Scott Caan, Frank Grillo, Taryn Manning, Marianne Rendón, Virginia Madsen, George Carroll and J.K. Simmons. The film’s original music is composed by David Sardy (Zombieland, End of Watch, 21, Bright, Premium Rush, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Monster Trucks).       Excellent idea! I do hope that Kazumi Totaka will the role of Koji Kondo as score consultant, should that happen. Same for David Wise when a DKC movie comes of the ground.
