Jed Kurzel (Alien: CovenantThe Babadook, Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed, The Oxford Murders, The Mustang) is reuniting with director Julius Avery on the upcoming supernatural horror thriller The Pope’s Exorcist. The film starring Russell Crowe, Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe & Franco Nero is inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican and follows the title character as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden. Michael Petroni (Possession, The Rite) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Unholy, Beauty and the Beast) wrote the screenplay. Doug Belgrad (Bad Boys for Life, Charlie’s Angels) is producing the project for 2.0 Entertainment, alongside Michael Patrick Kaczmarek for Jesus & Mary and Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz. Kurzel has previously collaborated with Avery on the filmmaker’s last three features, Son of a Gun, Overlord and Samaritan. The Pope’s Exorcist will be released in theaters nationwide on April 14, 2023 by Screen Gems/Sony Pictures.
