Thurston Moore (of the rock band Sonic Youth) has composed the original score for the new HBO limited series Irma Vep. The show is created, written and directed by Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria) based on his 1996 feature of the same title and stars Alicia Vikander, Vincent Macaigne, Jeanne Balibar, Devon Ross, Lars Eidinger, Vincent Lacoste, Nora Hamzawi, Adria Arjona, Carrie Brownstein, Tom Sturridge, Byron Bowers, Fala Chen, Hippolyte Girardot, Alex Descas and Antoine Reinartz. Pierre-Marie Dru (Annette, I Lost My Body) serves as the music supervisor of the 8-part drama, which follows an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup who comes to France to star in a remake of a  French silent film classic and struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. Assayas & Vikander are also executive producing the HBO/A24 co-production with Sylvie Barthet, Daniel Delume, Ravi Nandan (Moonbase 8, ZIWE), Hallie Sekoff (Ramy), Kevin Turen (Waves, Arbitrage), Stuart Manashil (Misanthrope) and Sam Levinson & Ashley Levinson (Euphoria, Malcolm & Marie). Moore has previously contributed music to several films, including James Mangold’s Heavy (for which he wrote a full score), Larry Clark’s Bully and Jordan Melamed’s Manic (for which he provided additional music). Irma Vep is premiering this month at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and will debut on June 6 on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
