Earlier this month, Aska Matsumiya (Skate Kitchen, Bruised, I’m Your Woman, Betty, Selah and the Spades) has recorded her score for the upcoming documentary Phoenix Rising. The film is directed by Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil, West of Memphis, The Case Against Adnan Syed) and follows actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood and the coalition she builds at The Phoenix Act, tracking the political and community focus the actor has established in the aftermath of her experience and trauma as a domestic violence survivor. Berg is also producing the project with Grace Sin, Lesley Goldman and Katie Doering. Matsumiya recorded her music at the Newman Scoring Stage on the Fox lot in Los Angeles. Phoenix Rising will premiere later this month at the virtual 2022 Sundance Film Festival and will air on HBO (and stream on HBO Max) later this year.

Matsumiya’s other recent projects also include Kogonada’s After Yang, which premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and is expected to be released this year by A24.
