Michael Giacchino has confirmed that he will be returning as the composer for the third installment in the Spider-Man series as part of Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe. The composer has previously scored the first two films, Spider-Man: Homecoming and last year’s Spider-Man: Far from Home. Jon Watts is returning to direct the movie, as are cast members Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Marisa Tomei. They are joined by Jamie Foxx who will reprise his role as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Ant-Man and the Wasp) wrote the screenplay and Kevin Feige & Amy Pascal are producing the project. The third Spider-Man film is set to be released in theaters on December 17, 2021 by Sony Pictures.
Giacchino’s other upcoming feature projects also include Matt Reeves’ The Batman (currently scheduled to be released on March 4, 2022), Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion (coming out on June 10, 2022) and the animated feature Extinct (co-scored with Mick Giacchino).
Expected, but certainly very welcomed. I hope he’ll be able to do some fun interplay between the Spider-Man and Doctor Strange themes.
With the original villains coming back, I’m curious if Giacchino will probably use the themes from previous Spider-Man films, by Danny Elfman, James Horner and Hans Zimmer? Guess we have to see the movie and hear the score ourselves if it’s true or not.
