Lin-Manuel Miranda has confirmed in an interview on today’s Good Morning America that he has been working on the music for a new animated feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios. The movie, which has the working title Encanto according to The Disinsider will be directed by Byron Howard (Tangled, Bolt) and Jared Bush (Zootopia). The animated musical will take place in Colombia and revolves around a young girl and her family. Charise Castro Smith serves as a co-director on the project. Clark Spencer (Wreck-It-Ralph, Ralph Breaks the Internet) and Yvett Merino Flores are producing the film. Miranda has previously written the original songs for Disney’s Moana (which was written by Bush) and is also involved in the studios’ upcoming The Little Mermaid live-action movie. No release date has been announced yet for Encanto.

Also coming up for Miranda is the film adaptation of his stage musical In the Heights, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 18, 2021, as well as Sony Pictures Animation’s Vivo, which is set to be released theatrically on June 4, 2021.

  1. Excuse me. I do have a question to ask you. If Lin-Manuel Miranda is writing and composing original songs for Encanto, then who will compose the score for the film? I know it’s too soon, but still.

I don’t think we’ll know for awhile. Some reports say he’s scoring the movie himself, but those claims aren’t verified.
