Mac Quayle (Mr. Robot, American Crime Story, Feud: Bette and Joan) has recently been scoring the upcoming Netflix original series Ratched. The show is created by Evan Romansky based on Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and stars Sarah Paulson in the title role of Nurse Ratched, alongside Finn Wittrock, Jon Jon Briones, Judy Davis, Harriet Harris, Cynthia Nixon, Charlie Carver, Corey Stoll, Hunter Parrish, Amanda Plummer and Sharon Stone. The drama tracks Ratched’s journey and evolution from an average nurse to full-fledged monster. Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck) is executive producing the Fox 21 Television Studios production with Michael Douglas (who served as a producer on Milos Forman’s 1975’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest film adaptation), Aleen Keshishian (Jane Got a Gun), Margaret Riley (Bombshell), Alexis Martin Woodall (Hollywood) and Jacob Epstein. Ratched will premiere later this year on Netflix.

Quayle also continues to score the Ryan Murphy-produced Netflix series The Politician (returning for its second season on June 19, 2020), as well as FX’s Pose and American Horror Story. He has also recently been co-scoring Fox’s 9-1-1 and its spin-off 9-1-1: Lone Star, which have been renewed for new seasons set to premiere in 2021.

If you go watch american horror story season one the episode where the nurses are murdered the music that plays while thenurse is undressing is the same music used in most of ratched ive heard so many melodies In the show that are the exact same as the melody is used in season 1 of American Horror Story not even going to lie if anybody thinks I’m crazy Compares some of the background melodies for example when Ratched goes to give the surviving priest a lobotomy and poisons his food there’s a song playing in the background that is the exact same as the song used in Murder House

    • jill says:

There is also music in the Pilot that is from Cape Fear with Robert De Niro. Lots of other melodies mimic the background scores in Cape Fear. Copy much???

    • Bernard Herrmann, the film composer and my father, is responsible for almost all of the music score for Ratched, not Mac Quayle. His famous themes from Cape Fear, Psycho, Vertigo and other film scores are used throughout the series without giving him credit. My father’s many fans and I can only hope that this gross oversight will be corrected in a subsequent series.

        Dorothy,
I cannot watch this show without thinking about your father! He was a truly brilliant composer, and he deserves to be recognized. One of my all-time favorite cinema composers!

  2. Tara says:

Certain chords and melodies sound like the opening of Penny Deeadful. It occured to me during episode 5, so I went and listened to the PD theme just to be sure and…sure enough.I was certain it had to be the same composer. It’s not.

  3. June Feldman says:

Bernard Herrmann’s music is easily identifiable. Kindly address the oversight whereby he has not been credited in this score.

  4. Mary Babette says:

The first episode has the Psycho Music in it. 09 – The Package
