Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool 2, John Wick, 300, Watchmen, Hobbs & Shaw) has been tapped to score the upcoming superhero movie The Suicide Squad. The film is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney who reprise their roles from the 2016 original movie. They are joined by new cast members David Dastmalchian, Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee, John Cena, Storm Reid, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson and Michael Rooker. Charles Roven (The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, Man of Steel) is producing the project with Peter Safran (Aquaman, The Conjuring). Steven Price has composed the music for the original David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad film. Bates has previously scored all of Gunn’s feature directorial efforts, including both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Slither and Super. The Suicide Squad is set to be released on August 6, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Bates’ other recent projects include the first seasons of ABC’s Stumptown & Paramount Network’s 68 Whiskey and the second season of USA’s The Purge. All shows are currently awaiting renewal decisions. The composer is also expected to return as co-composer of the second season of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Adult Swim series Primal.
I’m glad James Gunn is teaming up with Tyler Bates once again for a DCEU film this time.
I’m curious, does this mean that Price’s themes won’t be re-used? I think I’m one of the few people who liked his work on the first movie.
