Nicholas Britell has been tapped to score the upcoming Netflix original movie The King. The film is directed by David Michod (Animal Kingdom, The Rover) and stars Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Ben Mendelsohn, Robert Pattinson, Lily-Rose Depp, Tom Glynn-Carney and Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie. The historical drama is inspired by elements of Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Henry V and tells the story of Hal, a wayward prince, as he ascends the English throne upon his father’s death, and must navigate the palace snake pit, and inherited war and chaos. Michod also co-wrote the screenplay with Edgerton (The Gift, Boy Erased). They are also producing the Plan B Entertainment production with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner & Jeremy Kleiner (12 Years a Slave, Selma) and Porchlight Films’ Liz Watts (Mary Magdalene). Britell has previously scored Plan B’s Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, for both of which he earned Academy Award nominations, as well as The Big Short and Vice. The King will premiere later this year in select theaters and on Netflix.
As previously reported, Britell is also returning to score the second season of HBO’s Succession (premiering on August 11), for which he recently received an Emmy Award nomination for his main titles theme and is also attached to score Barry Jenkins’ Amazon limited series The Underground Railroad and Benjamin Millepied’s Carmen.
Certainly one of the few very promising young composers. Looking forward to it!
