Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the animated sequel The Secret Life of Pets 2 directed by Chris Renaud and starring Kevin Hart, Patton Oswalt, Lake Bell, Hannibal Buress, Harrison Ford and Tiffany Haddish. The film’s original music is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of WaterThe Grand Budapest HotelThe King’s Speech). Also opening nationwide is the X-Men movie Dark Phoenix directed by Simon Kinberg and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jessica Chastain. Hans Zimmer (The Dark KnightThe Lion KingInceptionGladiatorPirates of the Caribbean). Opening in limited release this weekend before expanding nationwide next week is the comedy drama Late Night directed by Nisha Ganatra and starring Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Denis O’Hare, Reid Scott and Amy Ryan. The film’s original score is composed by Lesley Barber (Manchester by the SeaYou Can Count On MeMansfield Park). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score (click here for more details). Interscope Records has released the original song Forward Motion written by Diane Warren and performed by Daya (click here for more information).

Also opening in limited release is the drama The Last Black Man in San Francisco written and directed by Joe Talbot and starring Jimmie Fails, Jonathan Majors, Rob Morgan, Tichina Arnold, Mike Epps and Danny Glover. Emile Mosseri has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in select theaters is the documentary Pavarotti directed by Ron Howard about iconic opera singer Luciano Pavarotti. Ric Markmann, Dan Pinella & Chris Wagner have provided the film’s score (and are credited as additional music composers). Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the most popular, signature arias & songs  performed by Pavarotti. Also opening in select cities is the comedy drama Changeland written and directed by Seth Green who also stars in the film alongside Breckin Meyer, Macaulay Culkin, Brenda Song and Clare Grant. The film’s original music is composed by Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump (Gnome Alone). Another limited release this week is the animated feature Funan directed by Denis Do. Thibault Kientz-Agyeman (Kirikou and the Men and Women) has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Running written by Kientz-Agyeman and performed by Rebecca Ferguson. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama Katie Says Goodbye written and directed by Wayne Roberts and staring Olivia Cooke, Christopher Abbott, Jim Belushi, Mary Steenburgen, Mireille Enos, Chris Lowell, Keir Gilchrist, Nate Coddry, Natasha Bassett and Gene Jones. Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Maniac, Beasts of No Nation, The Good Doctor) has composed the film’s original music. Opening in select theaters while also premiering on Netflix today is the documentary The Black Godfather directed by Reginald Hudlin about Clarence Avant, the ultimate, uncensored mentor and behind-the-scenes rainmaker in music, film, TV and politics. The film’s original score is composed by Jasha Klebe (Planet Earth II, Medal of Honor). Pharrell Williams has contributed the original song Letters to My Godfather (co-written with Chad Hugo), which is now available as a digital single.
