Max Richter is scoring the upcoming sci-fi drama Ad Astra. The film is directed by James Gray (The Lost City of Z, We Own the Night, The Immigrant) and stars Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Jamie Kennedy and Donald Sutherland. The movie follows a man who journeys across the solar system in search of his missing father, a dangerous renegade scientist. Gray also co-wrote the screenplay with Ethan Gross. Pitt and Grey are also producing the project for Plan B’s Dede Gardner & Jeremy Kleiner (12 Years a Slave, Moonlight, The Big Short) and RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira (Call Me By Your Name), Keep Your Head Productions’ Anthony Katagas (Nerve). Ad Astra is set to be released on May 24, 2019 by 20th Century Fox.

Richter (The Leftovers, Waltz with Bashir, Hostiles, Miss Sloane, Taboo) has also recently scored the period drama Mary Queen of Scots, which is being released in select theaters this weekend. He also composed the music for another movie premiering in 2019 (to be announced within the next 1-2 weeks).

It’s a shame that Thomas Newman is no longer attached

    • filmmusicreporter says:

      He never was.

      • Daniel says:

Wasn’t he, though? IMDb listed his name. It was one of the selling points for me. Now I have to settle for some bloke called Max Richter?

        • Håkan Lööw says:

Mister, let me tell you that Max Richter is one of the finest, most respected and greatest composers today. Look up his work.

          • Laurent says:

The most south after composer would have been Jóhann Jóhannsson, if he was still alive. Then on the list is Max Richter.
