hands-of-stoneOpening in around 800 theaters is the boxing drama Hands of Stone  written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz and starring Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Usher Raymond IV, Ana de Armas, Ellen Barkin and John Turturro. The film’s original score is composed by Angelo Milli (Seven Pounds). Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album featuring four tracks from the composer’s music, as well as the original song Champions performed by Usher & Rubén Blades and more songs by Blades. The film’s original score is composed by Stephen James Taylor (Timon & PumbaaTeacher’s Pet). Columbia Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the original song Start by John Legend, as well as tracks by Janet Jackson, The Delfonics, Soul II Soul, Slick Rick, Bill Withers & more. the-hollarsOpening in limited release is the indie comedy drama The Hollars directed by John Krasinski who also stars in the movie alongside Anna Kendrick, Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Charlie Day. Singer/songwriter Josh Ritter has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The Hollars follows a New York City artist who returns to his Middle America hometown on the eve of his mother’s brain surgery. sea-of-treesAlso opening in limited release is the drama The Sea of Trees directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe, Naomi Watts and Jordan Gavaris. The film’s original music is composed by Mason Bates. No word on a soundtrack release, but check out a couple of tracks from the score here. The Sea of Trees follows two men on a journey of reflection and survival in the Aokigahara, a mysterious dense forest at the base of Japan’s Mount Fuji. The drama premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD by A24.

the-interventionAlso opening in select cities is the indie comedy drama The Intervention written and directed by Clea DuVall who also stars in the movie with Melanie Lynskey, Cobie Smulders, Alia Shawkat, Natasha Lyonne and Ben Schwartz. Sara Quin, member of the pop duo Tegan and Sara, has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album is available. The Intervention takes place on a weekend getaway for four couples takes a sharp turn when one of the couples discovers the entire trip was orchestrated to host an intervention on their marriage. The dramedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Samuel Goldwyn Films.

complete-unknownOpening in New York before expanding to more markets within the next couple of weeks is the drama Complete Unknown directed by Joshua Marston and starring Rachel Weisz, Michael Shannon, Kathy Bates and Danny Glover. The film’s original music is composed by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans (The Gift, EnemyMartha Marcy May MarleneLast Days in the Desert). blood-in-the-waterAnother limited release this weekend is the thriller Blood in the Water directed by Ben Cummings & Orson Cummings and starring Willa Holland, Alex Russell, Miguel Gomez, David S. Lee and Julie Dretzin. The Newton Brothers (OculusBefore I WakeLife of CrimeDetachment) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which was originally entitled Pacific Standard Time, follows a group of 20-somethings who try to live above their means and get involved in a love triangle that goes terribly wrong. The thriller is being released by 33 Level Entertainment and is now also available on VOD.

floyd-normanAlso opening in select theaters is the documentary Floyd Norman: An Animated Life directed by Michael Fiore & Erik Sharkey about the life and career of 80-year-old Floyd Norman, the first African-American animator at Disney Studios. The film’s original music is composed by Ryan Shore (PrimeHarvard Man, Cabin Fever 2The Shrine) has composed the film’s original music. The documentary is being released by FilmBuff.
