Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

daddys-homeOpening in most theaters is the comedy Daddy’s Home directed by Sean Anders and starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini, Thomas Haden Church and Hannibal Buress. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Andrews (Donnie DarkoBridesmaidsNeighborsFreaks & GeeksFunny People). No soundtrack album has been announced. Daddy’s Home follows a mild-mannered radio executive who strives to become the best stepdad to his wife’s two kids, but complications ensue when their freeloading real father arrives.. concussionAlso opening wide is the drama Concussion written and directed by Peter Landesman and starring Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Paul Reiser, Luke Wilson, Arliss Howard and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. James Newton Howard (The Hunger GamesMaleficentKing KongSignsThe Sixth Sense) has composed the film’s original music. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. joyAlso opening nationwide this week is the comedy drama Joy is directed by David O. Russell and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini and Elisabeth Röhm. The film’s original score is composed by West Dylan Thordson & David Campbell. ABKCO Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music, as well as the songs from the film by artists including Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, Cream, Lee Morgan, Nat King Cole & more. point-breakThe fourth wide release this weekend is the action thriller Point Break directed by Ericson Core and starring Édgar Ramírez, Luke Bracey, Ray Winstone, Teresa Palmer and Delroy Lindo. Tom Holkenborg (Mad Max: Fury RoadBlack Mass, 300: Rise of an EmpireDivergent) has composed the film’s original music. Sleeping Giant Music has released a soundtrack album featuring a suite from the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the film by such artists as Andrew Watt, Headhunterz, MRKTS, Justin Young, Sempe, Gareth Thomas, Genevieve & more. hateful-eightOpening in around 100 theaters before expanding nationwide next weekend is the western The Hateful Eight written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Demian Bichir and Channing Tatum. The film’s original music is composed by Ennio Morricone (Once Upon a Time in the WestThe Good, the Bad and the UglyThe Mission). Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs featured in the movie by White Stripes, David Hess and Roy Orbison. the-revenantOpening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide on January 8 is the dramatic thriller The Revenant directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu and starring Leonard DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson & Will Poulter. Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Last EmperorSnake Eyes) and Alva Noto have composed the film’s original music and The National’s Bryce Dessner has also contributed additional music. 45-yearsAlso opening in limited release is the drama 45 Years written and directed by Andrew Haigh and starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. The movie doesn’t feature any original score and no soundtrack album has been announced. 45 Years centers on a married husband and wife in the middle of preparations for her 45th wedding anniversary when he receives news that the body of his old girlfriend, who died years earlier in a fatal accident, has finally been found.
