Lorne Balfe has been hired to score Michael Bay’s upcoming action drama 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. The film stars James Badge Dale, John Krasinski and Max Martini. The movie centers on the six members of a security team who fought to defend the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi from an attack of Islamist militants on September 11, 2012 – the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.. Chuck Hogan (The Strain) has written the screenplay based on the book of the same title by Mitchell Zukoff. Bay is also producing the drama with Erwin Stoff (Edge of Tomorrow, Unbroken, Constantine). Hans Zimmer will serve as the executive music producer on the project. Bay’s last couple of movies, including the Transformers films, The Island and Pain & Gain were scored by Steve Jablonsky. 13 Hours will be released on January 15, 2016 by Paramount Pictures. Balfe who previously scored Paramount’s Terminator Genisys earlier this year also has John Michael McDonagh’s comedy War on Everyone starring Michael Peña, Alexander Skarsgård and Theo James, as well as Nat Geo’s Saints & Strangers coming up.
Wait, what? What happened with Jablonsky and Bay?
I’ve got to admit, I’m highly disappointed by this. Other than Steamboy, Bay, for the most part, got the most out of Jablonsky. I hope nothing happened to their relationship… considering T5. 🙁

I don’t have an inside info, but it’s pretty obvious that it’s a schedule thing. Jablonsky still works on Bay movies. Right now he is scoring the Bay-produced Ninja Turtles 2, and also on Keanu and Deepwater Horizon – all big, 2016 movies. It’s pretty clear that he simply doesn’t have enough time to work on 13 Hours as well.
By the way, Lorne Balfe is not a surprising choice. He worked as an additional composer on Transformers 1 and Transformers 2, so he knows what Bay wants in terms of scores. Plus, he works with Zimmer on 13 Hours so that makes the project all the more exciting. Can’t wait for the score.
