hmmaLast night, the 6th Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMAA) were handed out at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Dan Romer was awarded for his score for Cary Fukunaga’s critically acclaimed Netflix original movie Beasts of No Nation in the Best Original Score – Feature Film category. Tom Holkenborg was honored for his music for George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road in the Original Score – Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film and thanked fellow nominees Christophe Beck and Harry Gregson-Williams for giving him his first jobs in the industry during his acceptance speech. Christophe Beck received his second HMMA for his work for The Peanuts Movie in the Best Score – Animated Film category. In addition, Miriam Cutler won the prize for her music for The Hunting Ground in the Original Score – Documentary category. Among the winners in the categories for television/digital series music were Mychael Jeff Danna who received the award for their main titles theme from FX’s Tyrant and Jeff Beal who was awarded for his work on Netflix’s House of Cards, two months after his first Emmy Award win for the show. All composers in the top score categories accepted their awards in person. The award in the Best Soundtrack Album category went to Fifty Shades of Grey released by Republic Records. Multiples Oscar nominee Diane Warren accepted her award in the Best Song – Documentary category for the Lady Gaga-performed song Til It Happens to You from The Hunting Ground. The song See You Again from Furious 7 (performed by  Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Puth) and Dancing in the Dark from DreamWorks Animation’s Home (performed by Rihanna) were the winners in the Best Song – Feature Film and Animated Film categories respectively. The Music Supervision awards went to Dana Sano for Fifty Shades of Grey and Jen Ross for Fox’s EmpireAustin Wintory was honored for his work on Assassin’s Creed Syndicate in the Original Score – Video Game category. Throughout the evening, there were several musical live performances by USC’s SoCal Vocals who performed the original song Flashlight from Pitch Perfect 2 and Claremont’s The After School Specials  who performed the HMMA-winning song Til it Happens to You. YouTube sensation Tiffany Alvord received an award for Outstanding Music Achievement in New Media and also gave a special performance at the event, which was hosted by comedian Ron Pearson and featured presenters such as Earth Wind and Fire’s Verdine White and New Radicals’ Danielle Brisebois who received an HMMA and an Academy Award nomination the previous year.
