Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

scorch-trialsExpected to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi action adventure The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials directed by Wes Ball and starring Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Ki Hong Lee, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Patricia Clarkson, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Rosa Salazar, Aidan Gillen, Jacob Lofland, Barry Pepper and Lili Taylor. The film’s original music is composed by John Paesano (DaredevilWhen the Game Stands Tall) who previously scored the first part in the series. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. black-mass black-massAlso opening wide is the crime drama Black Mass directed by Scott Cooper and starring Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller and Adam Scott. Tom Holkenborg (Mad Max: Fury RoadDivergent300: Rise of an Empire) has composed the film’s original score. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. captiveThe third wide release this week is the drama Captive directed by Jerry Jameson and starring David Oyelowo, Kate Mara, Leonor Varela, Jessica Oyelowo, Mimi Rogers and Michael K. Williams. The film’s original music is composed by Lorne Balfe (Terminator Genisys, Home, Megamind, Penguins of Madagascar). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Captive tells true story of Brian Nichols who broke out of a courthouse jail in 2005 and shot dead the judge assigned to his case as well as a court reporter, sheriff’s deputy and FBI officer. everestOpening in around 500 theaters, mostly IMAX screens, before expanding nationwide next week is the adventure drama Everest directed by Baltasar Kormákur and starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Sam Worthington, Michael Kelly, Robin Wright, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal. The film’s original music is composed by Dario Marianelli (AtonementPride and PrejudiceV for Vendetta, Anna Karenina). sicarioOpening in limited release before expanding nationwide on October 2 is the thriller Sicario directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Victor Garber and Jon Bernthal. Johann Johannsson (The Theory of Everything) who previously scored the director’s Prisoners has composed the film’s original music. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. pawn-sacrificeAlready playing in select theaters since this past Wednesday is the drama Pawn Sacrifice directed by Edward Zwick and starring Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, Lily Rabe and Robin Weigert. The film’s original music is composed by James Newton Howard (The Hunger GamesSigns, King KongBlood DiamondMaleficent). cootiesAlso opening in limited release is the horror comedy Cooties directed by Cary Murnion & Jonathan Milott and starring Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, Jack MacBrayer, Leigh Whannell, Nasim Pedrad, Ian Brennan and Jorge Garcia. The film’s original music is composed by Kreng. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s score. new-girlfriendAnother limited release this week is the French drama The New Girlfriend (Une nouvelle amie) written and directed by Francois Ozon and starring Romain Duris, Anaïs Demoustier and Raphaël Personnaz. Phillipe Rombi who previously scored Ozon’s Swimming PoolAngelPotiche and In the House has composed the film’s original music. Cristal Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last fall when the film was released overseas. the-cutAlso opening in select theaters this week is the historical drama The Cut directed by Faith Akin and starring Tahar Rahim, Simon Abkarian, Makram J. Khoury, Hindi Zahra, Kevork Malikyan, Bartu Kucukcaglayan, Trine Dyrholm and Moritz Bleibtreu. The film’s original music is composed by Alexander Hacke. Bureau B has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as an Armenian version of the song Everything To Get You Back by Hindi Zahra last fall when the movie opened in Europe. uncle-johnAlso opening in limited release is the thriller Uncle John directed by Steven Piet and starring John Ashton, Alex Moffat, Jenny Lyng and Ronnie Gene Blevins. Shawn Sutta and Adam Robt have composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score will be released by Lakeshore Records. Check back on this page for more information. Uncle John follows the disappearance of Dutch, a small-town bully who has reformed himself into a born again Christian. The thriller premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and is being released by FilmBuff.

jeremy-scottAlso opening in select cities is the documentary Jeremy Scott: The People’s Designer directed and produced by Vlad Yudin. The film’s original music is composed by Sebastian Kauderer (Border Run) and David Dahlquist. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s score, as well as  original hip hop and electronic tracks produced by Dahlquist and performed by R.C Bankwell, Space 9 & more.
