Patrick Doyle has been tapped to score DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming feature B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations. The film is directed by Tony Leondis and features a voice cast including Seth Rogen, Melissa McCarthy, Bill Murray, Rashida Jones, Jennifer Coolidge, Octavia Spencer and Matt Bomer. The movie follows two bumbling apparitions who find themselves in an extraordinary after-life adventure when they join the Bureau of Otherworldly Operations (B.O.O.), the ghost world’s elite counter-haunting unit. Tom Wheeler (Puss in Boots, The Cape) has written the screenplay based on an idea by Leondis and Maryann Garger (Astro Boy, Flushed Away) is producing the movie. Doyle has previously collaborated with Leondis on the animated film Igor. The project marks the Academy Award-nominated composer’s first project for DreamWorks Animation. He also scored Pixar’s animated movie Brave in 2012. B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations is set to be released on June 5, 2015 by 20th Century Fox.
As previously reported, Doyle also has Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella starring Lily James and Cate Blanchett coming up. The composer’s most recent project Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is currently playing in theaters. Doyle is also composing the music for the nature documentary Enchanted Kingdom 3D. The film is directed by Patrick Morris and Neil Nightingale and provides a never-before-seen perspective of the African continent using groundbreaking new 3D technology. Nightingale is also producing the BBC Earth Films, Reliance Pictures and Evergreen Films production. Enchanted Kingdom 3D is expected to premiere later this year. (Go See Talk)

Nice to see them continuing to branch away from FOH (Friends Of Hans) – Desplat, Silvestri, Elfman and now Doyle.
It’s amazing considering how Hans Zimmer, John Powell, Henry Jackman, Harry Gregson Williams, and Rupert Gregson Williams did most of their music for DreamWorks Animation (Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How To Train Your Dragon, etc). They’ve finally managed to get other composers that did some pretty good scores as well.
Alexandre Desplat’s score for Rise of the Guardians was beautiful and Alan Silvestri’s score for The Croods was beyond terrific. I’m pretty much looking forward to the two composer’s scores for both Mr. Peabody and Sherman and B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations when those movies come out.
If there’s one music composer I think that DreamWorks would have to hire as well to score for either one or two movies, it would have to be James Horner. I know he finished doing his scores for animated feature films for kids in the 1990s, but I’m just wondering if he would ever come back to score for animation again. Just saying.
