Academy Announces 114 Original Scores in Oscar Race

oscars3The Academy of Motion Pictures Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the eligible movies in contention for nominations in the Original Score category for the 86th Academy Awards. Notable, but expected omissions include American Hustle (Danny Elfman), August: Osage County (Gustavo Santaolalla), Frozen (Christophe Beck) and Nebraska (Mark Orton). The 114 eligible scores along with the composer are listed below in alphabetical order by film title:

        Really? 3:10 to Yuma, Soul Surfer, Hurt Locker, I, Robot, The Wolverine, Scream, etc.? Sure. Whatever you say. At least his music doesn’t all sound the same like some people like say *cough* Hans Zimmer.

      Maybe because they used a track from Muse for the opening credits or because he didn’t submit it. Either way, unlikely that the score would have been a contender.

    It’s probably because that Muse track was used several times throughout the whole movie, almost like it was the main theme.

  4. The composer himself has to submit his score to the Academy in order for it to be eligible. There is also this from the Academy’s press release which was not published here:

    “In order to qualify for eligibility, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.”

    Mike Patton ! he always was a great artist not like hans zimmer who made 2000 movie themes and all of them sounds the same. we should start to give awards for the ones with real talent !Congratulations Mike !

    Good to see nods for Patton, and for Joseph Bishara’s work on The Conjuring, but…nothing for Shane Carruth’s gorgeous score for Upstream Color? Shenanigans!

  9. after seeing these movies , as a SAG award nominating committee member AND composer with Grammy nomination credits, I stand by my initial opinion. I really think Steven Price deserves a nod for his work in Gravity.

      Yeah i sincerely hope Steven Price will get an Oscar for Gravity, it’s an astonishingly good score, the most groundbreaking of the year.
